Chicago Bears fans were holding their breath when Luther Burden left practice early on Saturday. Burden has been a standout performer through the first two weeks of camp and is looking to be a focal point in the offense in 2026. On Sunday afternoon, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Burden suffered a groin injury and is slated to miss a little bit of time. Then, early Monday morning, Adam Schefter reported that Burden is expected to miss the preseason but be healthy for Chicago's Week 1 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

While it's encouraging to hear that the Burden should be back for the start of the regular season, the Bears and their fans need to be cautious about this injury. After what happened last year with Jaylon Johnson, Chicago can't risk rushing Burden back to quicklu from a groin injury.

Why the Bears Need to Be Patient With Luther Burden

Every Bears fan remembers that Johnson's 2025 season was riddled with injuries. However, what some may not remember is that his injury issues began with a groin injury before training camp even started. His groin injury kept him out until Week 2.

Unfortunately, Johnson was pushing to get back on the field as quickly as he reinjured his groin and also suffered a torn abductor. Johnson likely tore his abductor overcompensating for the already existing groin injury. The torn abductor resulted in him missing 10 weeks of the season because of surgery. Then, once Johnson returned, he still didn't look like himself.

Instead, it took Johnson about nine months to fully recover. He told reporters last week that he feels “night and day” compared to how he felt last year.

That said, just because Johnson's injury turned into something more doesn't mean Burden's will. Burden is younger than Johnson, and younger players can sometimes recover from injuries quicker.

However, that doesn't mean the Bears should rush Burden back. Johnson's experience should serve as a reminder that Chicago needs to be cautious with this injury, especially with how important Burden will be to the offense in 2026.

Why This Injury Matters for Luther Burden

As mentioned earlier, Burden has been a standout so far in training camp. Besides tight end Colston Loveland, he has been the player most talked about by reporters. Burden's speed and explosiveness are huge contributors to why he's stood out. But this groin injury affects both of those elements in his game.

Throughout training camp, Bears players and coaches have also talked a bunch about Burden during their press conferences. His name continues to come up when discussing the offense and the impact he can have this season. That shows how quickly Burden has established himself as an important piece of what Chicago is trying to build offensively.

If he takes the field in Week 1 and is not fully healthy, it will be noticeable. Moreover, putting him out on the field when he isn't fully healthy could turn a short-term injury into a much bigger problem for the Bears. Although Chicago has good depth behind Burden, no matter who makes the roster, nobody will be able to completely replace his expected production.

Burden's presence also gives opposing defenses another mismatch to worry about. If he isn't available, that's one less mismatch defenses have to account for on every play. That gives opposing teams a slightly easier time game planning against Ben Johnson's offense over the course of a 17-game season.

That's why losing Burden for the season could potentially jeopardize the Bears' season. It wouldn't mean Chicago suddenly becomes a bad football team. It would mean the offense loses one of its most dynamic weapons and becomes a little easier to defend.

The Bears need Burden healthy when the games matter most, not just back on the field as quickly as possible.
