Prior to the start of last season, the Chicago Bears signed Kyler Gordon to a three year $40 million contract extension. At the time, that made Gordon the highest-paid slot cornerback in the NFL. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old was unable to play most of the 2025 season due to a myriad of soft tissue injuries (hamstring, groin, calves). Gordon now enters a pivotal year in 2026 with lots to prove.
2026 is a Make-or-Break Season for Kyler Gordon
When Gordon is healthy, he is one of the most dynamic defenders on the field. He is often used as extra blitz help off the edge because of his speed. The 26-year-old has also proven he can be one of the better cover corners in the slot. In 2024, he ranked 11th in coverage among all cornerbacks, according to PFF.
That said, availability has been an issue throughout Gordon's four-year career. In each of his first four NFL seasons, he has missed at least one game because of injury. Last season was by far the most time he has missed, appearing in just three games. In 2024, Gordon missed two games. The season before, he missed four games, and during his rookie campaign, he was sidelined for three contests.
For a player with Gordon's talent, staying healthy has become just as important as what he does once he steps on the field. The Bears know the impact he can make, but they also need to know they can count on him every week.
Ben Johnson Wants Gordon on the Field
During OTAs, it was reported that Gordon was yet again dealing with soft tissue problems. Head coach Ben Johnson spoke on Gordon and his injury situation following a practice in the spring.
Johnson said, "We know he’s a good player when he’s out there, but trust level is a huge thing for this team, for this coaching staff, for the locker room. You can only develop that trust by being available."
These comments show that Johnson and the coaching staff are somewhat frustrated with Gordon's injuries. Many Bears fans feel this way, too. Both coaches and fans would like to see one of the Bears' most versatile defenders on the field and healthy.
The Bears Have More Options Than Ever
Another injury-plagued season could put Gordon's long-term future with the Bears in question. This offseason, Chicago drafted Texas Longhorns cornerback Malik Muhammad. Some believe Muhammad may challenge Tyrique Stevenson for the starting outside corner position opposite Jaylon Johnson. However, Muhammad was playing in the slot during the Bears' rookie minicamp this spring.
Moreover, Gordon's contract gives the Bears additional flexibility after this season. In 2026, his dead cap hit sits at $17.5 million. That number drops significantly to just $5 million in 2027, making it much easier for Chicago to move on financially if injuries continue to limit his availability. While the organization undoubtedly hopes that doesn't happen, the contract structure adds another layer of importance to Gordon's 2026 campaign.
Why 2026 Will Define Gordon's Future
Training camp will be a big test for Gordon. If he can make it through camp without missing practice because of injuries, it would be a good sign that his soft tissue issues are behind him. However, the real challenge will be staying healthy throughout the regular season. If Gordon can finally put together a full season, he'll remind everyone why the Bears made him the highest-paid slot cornerback in the NFL. If the injuries continue, though, Chicago could begin looking at other options heading into 2027. That's why 2026 could end up being the biggest season of Gordon's career.
